BRISONS STORY
11 January 1851, Cape Cornwall. En route to Jamaica from the Mersey, the brig New Commercial was caught in a violent storm, and wrecked on the jagged rocks of the Brisons. Captain Samuel Sanderson and his wife, Mary, were stranded as the crew were washed away into the black sea. For two long nights the storm raged, while Mary, clad on only in her nightie, fought for her life on the desolate rocks. Thousands watched helplessly from the cliffs of Cape Cornwall as huge waves beat back the desperate attempts at rescue. Eventually, a boat got close enough to fire a rocket to the pair, and the couple were dragged through the breakers onto the waiting boats. Tragically, Mary died of exposure and exhaustion before she could reach the shore. Her husband survived. The incident led to the creation of the Sennen RNLI station three years later. Mary is buried in Sennen Churchyard. The inscription on her grave reads: “Sacred to the memory of Mary, the beloved wife of Capt. S. Sanderson and fourth daughter of the late Revd. Thos. Wood of Newcastle-on-Tyne, who was shipwrecked on the Brisons and afterwards perished while being drawn through the waves. [Aged 34 years. In the midst of life we are in death.”
